Jan Dibbets, b.1941, is a Dutch conceptual artist who has spent most of his life dedicated to photographic art. He was one of the first artists to recognise the validity of colour photography as an artistic medium and has continually developed a thinking approach to photography. The inherent lie of the photograph is of particular interest to him.

Using photography as an analytical tool, Dibbets developed new ways of understanding visual phenomena. For example in his series entitled Colorstudy C1, C2, C3, C4 (1976), in which he photographed doors and cars around his Amsterdam studio, he focused on the objects' surfaces.

Since the late 1960s, when he began to create works in the context of Conceptual art, he has used photography as a medium, but in no way can he be defined as a photographer.
